Growing up in the city of Nottingham, the Castle and its surrounding areas are so iconic to our childhood and history. Set way up high on the cliffs of ‘Castle Rock’, with spectacular views spanning across the city, this medieval 17th Century castle once rivalled the great likes of Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. With it’s rich history of sieges, battles and royalty, and impressive connections to those such as Edward the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart and of course the legend of Robin Hood, we think that this magnificent building should definitely be a top venue choice for Nottingham couples wanting to say “I do”.

The Castle is a beautifully diverse venue – based in the very heart of a vibrant and creative city, it is home to six acres of Victorian inspired grounds and gardens, a majestic gallery overflowing with decorative and fine art, a hidden gatehouse room and, as you may already know, it sits proudly above the magical caves of Nottingham. Such a charming and charismatic setting for our eclectic and pretty theme, and an extremely unique location for your big day.

Along with our lovely team of suppliers and models, back in March we got to relive our youth and explore this amazing venue once again, only this time in all its glory! We spent the day dodging rain-clouds as we hopped from one part of the Castle to the next, hanging ribbons, carrying balloons, and watching in the wings as Ed Brown snapped away photographs of our New Age Vintage styling coordination theme– our take on the popular vintage trend, with added care-free bohemian vibes.

Set at the end of a tree-lined walkway, in the middle of the Castle grounds, the light and airy Castle Bandstand is hard not to fall in love with. It’s quaint charm, wooden floors and majestic crystal chandelier, that contrasts so beautifully with the surrounding greenery, makes this venue a perfect match for those wanting an intimate and unique ceremony.

Styling this Bandstand was so much fun for us here at On a Day Like This – this beautiful space really suited our vintage touches and pops of soft pinks and blues. Our ceremony backdrop – a hand-written and hand-painted scroll (by Polly&Me) draped over the back of a vintage door, adorned with a stunning floral garland by Mrs.Umbels and completed with some of our favourite vintage decor pieces – is bound to turn heads on your special day, as well as looking amazing in photographs!

Mrs.Umbels’ creative floral and pheasant-feather arrangements, together with the prettiest hand-painted signs by Polly&Me reading ‘Take a seat, not a side”, were a perfect match for this aisle of industrial-style chairs. Standing under the streams of ribbons, in the middle of this beautifully quaint space, is sure to be the most memorable place to ever recite those vows.

The Bandstand isn’t the only ceremony space available at Nottingham Castle for your wedding day. The South Bastion, a small but gorgeous room situated within the 13th Century gatehouse, is also a popular option for ceremonies. However, we thought it would be the perfect spot for our a New Age Vintage theme reception room decor, and so we decided to be a little bit creative…

The room oozes history and medieval charm. A rounded, turret-style space with beautiful stone walls, delicate glass windows and an intriguing selection of flags and shields. Our aim here was to create a playful and whimsical dining area – a perfect option for trendy couples wanting to enjoy a laid-back and intimate meal with their loved-ones. Spacious round tables filled the room, styled with vintage-style books, beautiful candles, and pretty pearl beads – and adorned with the most creative arrangements of vibrant flowers and pheasant feathers – all hand-picked and home-grown by the extremely talented Sarah of Mrs.Umbels.

Our New Age Vintage theme that you see in these pictures includes an array of candles, centrepieces, personalised calligraphy, seat decorations, edible favours, fresh flowers and so, so much more to style your guest tables. We select only the best-quality items in our themes and we’re always happy to meet any bespoke requests that you might have. We work hard with our preferred, industry-suppliers such as Polly & Me and Yummy Little Cakes, to bring our couples the very best quality products.

At the very back of the South Bastion room stood the most important part of the reception room … the top table! A special place for the two love-birds to sit alongside their newly extended family and enjoy the rest of their magical day, laughing away the hours and sharing sweet stories with their nearest and dearest.

Beautiful glass vase arrangements,  dimpled  jars overflowing with Mrs.Umbels flowers, and water-coloured  ‘bride’ and ‘groom’ name cards by Polly&Me really made this table pop!

To the right of the room, in front of the delicate glass window, the dessert-table overflowed with artistic cake creations. Natalie, of Yummy Little Cakes, really outdid herself this time! The stunning three-tiered cake took centre-stage on the table, it’s stunning pink and turquoise water-colour exterior could almost be mistaken for marble! Scattered around the rest of the table were delicate pink meringue swirls and cake-pops, and complete with yet another scrumptious cake – decorated with mint buttercream frosting, impressive pink chocolate ganache drips, and topped with a beautifully hand-drawn topper by Polly&Me– each element encapsulating our new age, playful theme perfectly. We absolutely loved working with  Yummy Little Cakes for this cake table, together with Polly&Me’s gorgeous, hand-written water-coloured cards and cake toppers, Mrs Umbels floral arrangements,  and our themed decor, the whole table looked like a masterpiece!

The seating-plan for our New Age Vintage theme was of course made for us by our wonderful preferred supplier, and friend, Polly&Me. Beautifully creative, watercoloured, seating-plan cards hung from a charming, repurposed window frame. A perfect decor piece to welcome your guests.

The Castle not only offers amazing rooms and unique spaces for wedding ceremonies and receptions, but it also offers a variety of wonderful photographic opportunities for you lovely couples and your guests – it truly is a venue that has everything!

Within the grounds of the Castle, on your way to your reception meal, stop and take advantage of the tree-lined walkway in front of the bandstand, or the steps leading up to the main building. Perhaps, if the wind is on your side, you could even take the walk up to the very edge of the Castle walls and look out onto the bustling city below. Outside the gates of the Castle, take a walk down the hill and pose alongside Nottingham’s most famous legend, Robin Hood – the tall walls of the Castle built within the rocks make for a stunning backdrop. And when you’re done with your wedding-day photography? Why not have a few drinks in one of England’s oldest inns, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, built into the rocks that the Castle stands upon – what more can a venue possibly have to offer?!

With a photographer like Ed Brown, getting that ‘perfect shot’ is effortless and simple, and having the talented glamour-team of VM Hairdressing and Gail Berry on hand – it’s not surprising that these images came out so beautifully.

We absolutely loved Vicki and Gail’s take on our New Age Vintage theme for this shoot – a flirtatious and bold red lip, enchanting entwined braids, and a beautifully striking floral head-garland made by Mrs.Umbels. These ladies are especially talented at what they do, and we couldn’t imagine any bride being without them on their special day! Their creativity is endless, their work effortless and their abilites are extremely versatile! We certainly love this duo, glamour, dream-team here at On a Day Like This!
