Last month, us OADLT girls piled-up our trusty van high with balloons and boxes aplenty and set out on a short road-trip through the fields and forests of North-West Nottingham, and up to the beautiful grounds of Newstead Abbey. Hours slipped away as we explored the corridors and passageways of The Cloisters, stood in awe of the regal Great Hall, and watched as Ed Brown created beautiful photographs of our Metallic Luxe Styling Coordination Theme.
The Abbey is a beautifully historic building, a former monastic house during the 12th Century and a place that the great poet Lord Byron once called home. To this day, the building still oozes the same distinctive, medieval character and Gothic charm, with breathtaking views out onto it’s flourishing gardens and across the vast Garden Lake – a truly luxurious setting for our metallic and blush theme, and a show-stopping site for your big day.
This venue has such a good variety of spaces available for weddings and events, with the diversity to suit any preference. Whether it’s a religious ceremony in The Chapel you’re after, or a marquee reception in the grounds, all areas of the Abbey offer a romantic atmosphere and picturesque setting for your day!
One of the most striking and atmospheric areas of the Abbey is the Cloisters. Originally the Medieval Priory Cloisters, these breathtaking passageways will lead you into the arms of your groom or bride-to-be, patiently awaiting you in The Orangery or The Chapel. As you walk along the cool stone floor, your hands trembling with anticipation, glance out into the beautiful Cloister Gardens and look for the peacocks dancing around the water-fountain – the sight is sure to set your nerves at ease.
We styled this walkway with our Metallic Luxe tasseled balloons, a playful touch of contemporary-style and luxury amidst the history and drama of the space. The over-sized balloons framed the corridor perfectly, a special OADLT take on the traditional red carpet entrance!
When you reach The Orangery, be sure to give yourself a few seconds to take-in your stunning surroundings before getting ready to recite those vows. The room is beautifully decorative, with stunning stone archways, ornate plaster ceiling and classical paintings. Complete with its crystal chandelier and large glass windows overlooking the gardens, this venue makes a delightful place to say “I do!” (and with space for around 100 guests – there’s plenty of room for all those friends and relatives to witness your special day too!).
Our selection of Metallic Luxe Themed props blended into this room so beautifully. The ribbon & copper seat tassels perfectly lined the aisle of charming Chiavari chairs. The golden-dipped feathers hung from the over-sized balloons, framing the decorated signing-table. And the gorgeous ‘His’ and ‘Hers’ chair signs, hand-written by the talented Allie of Polly&Me, awaited their bride and groom-to-be.
The Orangery isn’t the only ceremony room available at Newstead Abbey for your wedding day. If you would instead like a religious ceremony, the Abbey is home to the magnificent Chapel, a place of rich history and an amazing architectural sight to behold. Or perhaps The Garden Room appeals to you – a quiet, cool and peaceful Victorian room with cream decor, perfect for intimate ceremonies.
After you have said “I do” (wherever you may choose!), head back through The Cloisters and up to The West Front Suite. A contemporary space with a historic twist, this venue is ideal for both formal and informal wedding receptions. It’s Gothic, arched windows offer stunning views over The Abbey’s parklands and lakes, and over to the left of the room you may even spot a few nosey onlookers attempting to join the party…
Here, our aim was to create a luxurious and elegant reception room – a perfect option for contemporary and style-conscious couples wanting to impress and spoil their loved ones with plenty of treats and lavish eye-candy. Spacious round tables filled the room, styled with shimmering sequined table-runners, metallic and glass vases, ornamental copper centrepieces and beautiful silver candle-holders – and adorned with the prettiest arrangements of blush, peach and white roses we ever did see – all hand-picked and home-grown by the very-talented Sarah of Mrs.Umbels.
Our Metallic Luxe theme includes an array of candles, centrepieces, personalised calligraphy, seat decorations, edible favours, fresh flowers and so, so much more to style your guest tables. We select only the best-quality items in our themes and we’re always happy to meet any bespoke requests that you might have. We work hard with industry-suppliers such as Polly & Me and Yummy Little Cakes, to ensure that your guests feel like royalty!
But the most important part of the reception room is of course the top table! A place for the two love-birds to sit alongside their newly extended family and enjoy the rest of their magical day laughing away the hours and reminiscing on those embarrassing stories that the best man just had to share with your nearest and dearest (cringe!).
To make this top table really POP, we installed our romantic ribbon backdrop and used our most beautiful decor for the table – we even brought out our copper cutlery, aren’t they just stunning?! Polly&Me completed the scene here with this gorgeous, hand-written “You and me” wooden sign.
At the opposite side of The West Front Suite, through the stone archways, the dessert-table overflowed with artistic cake creations. Natalie’s brush-stroke macaroons, delicate meringue swirls, pink chocolate pyramids & pineapples, and jaw-dropping cakes suited our glamorous theme perfectly. We feel so privileged to work with Yummy Little Cakes, she manages to pull it out the bag each and every time! And with a little help from her equally as fabulous roomie, Allie, and her gorgeous, hand-written copper-leaf cards and cake toppers, along with our dramatic ribbon and mirror frame backdrop, the whole table looked like a masterpiece!
And yet again, Metallic Luxe would not be complete without the Calligraphy work of Polly&Me. These gorgeous copper themed, seating-plan and signage elements, made especially for On a Day Like This, add a unique and personal element to our styling themes and look absolutely beautiful amongst the glamorous tones and floral arrangements by Mrs Umbels. We particularly loved Lord Byron’s poem, hung from the wall of the reception room – what a special and meaningful decor addition to this historic venue.
Newstead Abbey not only offers amazing rooms for wedding ceremonies and receptions, but it also offers a variety of unique and wonderful photographic opportunities for you lovely couples and your guests – it truly is a venue that has everything!
Working with the amazingly-gifted Ed Brown really was a dream come true for us here at On a Day Like This. Our aim and request for this photo-shoot was for Ed to create oil painting-esque images of the model, ones that looked good enough to hang on the walls of The Abbey for years to come! And we hope you agree with us when we say… “He did it!” These shots ooze elegance, drama, grandeur and luxury – the setting of The Abbey, from The Grand Hall back down to The Cloisters, really allowed for so many amazing backdrops.
Outside, within the grounds of the Abbey, there are ample places for the perfect photograph. We just couldn’t resist getting a shot of Jennifer behind the beautifully charming waterfall – Ed did a great job of creating such a wonderful image without getting too wet! Hidden away, this is an oh-so-romantic spot for you newlyweds to wind down and enjoy each others company.
We are so delighted to be Newstead Abbey’s preferred wedding & events venue styling specialist and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this unique and historic building to our couples, for wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions.
